Hi Charles and Hawfich, thanks for the reply.
I got a bit carried away with the raised beds. We have dogs and chickens, so I built the beds a good height to ‘discourage’ them from walking all over the produce – but I hadn’t thought through about the filling them! The other option would have been to fence the area off, which would be a bit jarring (aesthetically) in a small ornamental garden.
We do make our own garden compost, but that had been all used in the autumn mulching of the borders – I can see my wife and I competing for this valuable resource from now on.
Well, will have to make the best of what’s there now – and see what the year brings.
