Thanks Stringfellow and Leif. I have been growing veg on this plot for about 10 years, and the beds where I have worked most have a bit less horsetail and bind weed than the fruit bushes patch, so digging has helped a bit. I feel loathed to leave my plot uncultivated for two seasons, but will do it if I have to.

If anyone else has any suggestions though……. will look into the turnips, even though none of my family eat them!
