I lay fleece on top of all plantings at the moment.
My cabbages look a little squashed after planting but within a few days start to push up. The fleece keeps warmth in at ground level where they can use it more and soon you see the plants grow fast.
Plant them quite deep, all stem in the ground. Same with all plants e.g. my lettuces are slightly below surface level at planting time.
