Just to follow up on this. I generally go with the instructions on the seed packet when sowing, adjusting only for the sowing dates to allow for my particular environment.
On this particular packet of Basil seeds it did not specify a sowing depth but as I had also been sowing Tomato seeds that afternoon, and they had a sowing depth advised of 1.5cm, I figured as they were similar size seeds I would go with that figure. It did niggle me a bit which is why I turned to yourself.
I have reread that chapter more closely since and will sow accordingly in future.
But just to confirm, small seeds such as these are best sown with just a sprinkling of compost covering them?
Are there any exceptions?
