Yes its true Karen that you can prick seedlings deeper and lose the long stem.
On basil, for the second year running I have better germination from direct sowing 2 or 3 seeds into small module cells (60 per tray A4 size) compared to sowing in a seed tray on the same date.
I think the module trays drain more freely and basil is highly sensitive to compost lying damp.
Both modules and seed tray are half west riding compost, half vermiculite.
