Don I think “science” struggles to understand gardening and nature.
I once tried a few carrots among a whole bed of onions and they got the maggots.
Also I think that the flies can hatch annoyingly outside those two times you mention.
Also fleece is easily holed and mesh is better option as the flies seem to find any holes quite magically.
