Aha! Many thanks both and that makes sense, especially regarding PSB and sprouts.

My friends at the allotment seemed to think that the firmness of the soil was relating to the lack of heart in the spring cabbage (and I’d also heard that sprouts may blow if not firmed in enough!); this now seems to be misplaced info.
