Thanks. I will remove the straw and try to pul up all the weeds.

If i remove the straw is not the surface layer rather similar to a naked soil surface exposed to drought, weeds etc?

So the best surface layer should be a we’ll decomposed mulch to keep weeds out and moisture in, if i have understood it right?
