I use polypropylene string that is from small bales of hay and straw. Ideally, cut on the knot so that the end with a knot goes in the hole. All pants twisted around gently, about once a week from June.
Yes it works for cucumber and melon, is strong enough to support much weight , sometimes cucumber slide down a bit but keep growing.
