I think his greensand is what we call calcified seaweed, now hard to find after, I believe, over dredging of the sea bed.
Whatever you put on, I would put it down before compost as then its in contact with lots of microorganisms to make it biologically active.
On the surface works too because earthworms like to eat rockdust and seaweed meal.
