Yes what a joy to have sun and less cold wind too.
I have always potted and planted cucumber, courgette and squash to bury long stems up to their cotyledons, giving the plants some stability. But cucumber stems are especially fragile and need care when handling, perhaps you bruised them last year or perhaps it was just the cold and wet. I would put them in quite deep, just go steady as you do it.
