It is worth a try especially if you are concerned about weeds. I wonder whether the cardboard might be breaking up a little by June to August when the earthing up effect is most needed, to give soft soil for new tubers and to keep light off them. If so you could perhaps lay some more around plants.
I use some extra compost but as not everyone has enough for that; do other gardeners here have experience of growing good potatoes without digging?
