Nice description of butterflies shooting eggs, it does feel like that sometimes!
Fleece can work but…. is easily torn and you need only one hole for a butterfly to enter. Then their eggs and caterpillars are protected from predators.
So I recommend mesh or netting, the latter of ‘butterfly grade’. Yes they are expensive but last longer than fleece, up to fifteen years. Also they let more air through which is better in summer.
