How long to leave mulch and covering

Thank you for that info Charles. I have quite a lot of grass-weed which spreads underground so I have gone ahead and covered up half the vegetable plot hoping to stop them as well as enriching the future growing medium. I have put cardboard over the compost mulch and then black plastic on top. Do you think it would be Ok to leave it like that in the summer? I was wondering if it would get too hot in the hot Spanish summer.
I already have the potatoes planted from 3 weeks ago and after harvesting them I would like to apply the same mulch and cover.
