I created an in situ compost pile just to see what happened (newspaper, tomato/potato haulms and spent tomato compost with soil on top) and planted winter onions and garlic in the autumn and radish on the remainder on a weekly basis this spring.
I put a top dressing of horse manure in January where the garlic and onions were just to try and absorb more of the rain and started sowing radish weekly from mid March.
The mushrooms started coming up toward the end of March, which I plucked as I made drills for new rows.
The radish have all grown happily and the first row will be harvested next week. Where the mushrooms grew the radishes have grown just as happily as where they didn’t.
The only downside was one row partially devoured by an army of slugs, which seem to have been deterred in the main by some pellets I put down as a result. My long-lapsed cricket fielding arm has been gently reawakened each morning since to deposit three to four shelled creatures over the boundary fence!!
