Ah Zuf, go for rows then. I did not know of your mulching constraints. It will be interesting to hear how it works.
Keep beds for close-planted veg like salads, spinach, carrots.
I hope that slugs will not be too bad under the undecomposed mulches. It depends on the weather partly. Main problem time is the fortnight after planting out when plants are weak.
