I put fairly fresh manure down on clay soil last November and things seem to be growing well enough through it now. That was horse manure, not cow or sheep.
I got mine from one local stables that just puts its waste out by the car park to fester – some bags and a spade a few weekends running got me the best part of half a cubic metre.
