Hi, wonder if someone can help, I am just moving allotment’s and want to use the opportunity to start out using no dig methods. The cow manure I have is still very strawy, only about a year I think. I plan to mulch over what is light grass and a few other annual weeds with six inches of manure and then landscaping fabric I already have. Is this viable or am I going to have to spend more time rotting down the manure before spreading under the plastic?
ThanksHi Corrine. The manure will rot in situ underneath your fabric, pretty much as quickly as in a pile. If you’re leaving the fabric down for a few months to suppress weed growth, I’d be inclined to spread the year old manure and let nature do its thing. HTH.
I would have said the same thing too as the surface area is so much larger for all the bacteria and fungi to work plus all the worms. We will still get some frosts which will also help if it’s in a layer and not a heap.
Good ideas here, do bear in mind Corinne that you will probably have more slugs this year.
By 2018 when your soil has absorbed the goodness, cropping will be easier.
