I have created a veg patch out of about 1/8th acre. Half is all planted up, weeded and looks great. The other half which we want to put to asparagus beds and extra beds next year is couch, thistles and bindweed – however much we try and keep on top of it, it just can’t be tamed!
If we just mowed it and then put some weed suppressant polythene on top, would this be enough to kill off most of the weeds? And when would it be best to uncover it again?
As I have just spent 2 hours weeding it and it looks much the same, I need to find another way to get it weed-free for next year.
I suggest you cover it exactly as you are guessing, but I would not plant asparagus until March 2013 because there is now only half a season until winter, not long enough to exhaust bindweed roots in particular. Spread a good couple of inches of any half- or well-rotted organic matter on top of the mown weeds before covering. Keep the light excluding cover on until about next June, then remove it and clear any visible weed roots (with a trowel probably) and then plant some leeks or kale or whatever for next autumn and winter, at the same time as removing any weedy regrowth, so the soil is really clean by then end of next year.
