we have a smallholding and have 100 laying hens, as you can imagine this makes for a lot of poo!

We are in the middle of redesigning our 1/4 acre veg patch and we are going to have a compost area. My question is, shoild I put all the poultry manure in with the normal compost or should we make a seperate bay and let it rot down first?

    Thanks Rosie

It sounds a lot and would probably be more in volume than your other compost ingredients? Is there any bedding or just poo? It will make better compost if mixed with some straw, leaves and other ingredients.
But pure poo is possible, just you end up with something more like fertiliser and I am unsure how stable the nitrogen is.

Thanks for the reply. There are shavings and straw mixed in, lots of straw in the Winter when they come into the barn when the weather is at its worst and a small amount of shavings in the nest boxes  all yr round.

we do have lots of trees and I was going to make a seperate bay for leaf mold but would the leaves be better in the main compost with the poo?

I would keep the leaves separate since you have all that bedding!
