Anyone know ‘normal’ germination time for Sweet Pepper seeds…

I ask, as I’d never sown them before this year and they seemed to take a lot longer than tomato seeds.

I planted 2 seeds each of Bendigo and Bell Boy on 5th February. The Bell Boys both came through today 18th February, whilst the Bendigo has still not emerged.

I initially sowed them in soil without moistening too much but with cling film over the top of 8cm pots. When nothing came through after a week, I let the pots stand in 2cm of luke warm rainwater for about 10 minutes to absorb moisture by osmosis. For the whole time, the pots have been in the dark in our outdoor boiler house at around 25C.

Any experienced pepper growers who can see any major mistakes I’ve made, please advise!!

Im guessing that the temperature has quite a big impact on peppers germinating as they are a warmth loving plant.
Looking at my records 2 to 3 weeks would look to be about normal on my window sill over the last 3 years that I have grown them. Although I do sow them a little later in the year than you.

It’s really a question of deciding whether I need to sow some more or not.

I’ll wait another week for the Bendigos before having another go then.

So, the slower of the two varieties has taken 14 days to poke its nose out.

I guess in future I can try a few experiments to see if I can speed it up any way or other…….
