I’ve just taken delivery of some asparagus crowns. I have an area waiting for them which has been covered in green waste compost all winter with only a few docks showing through which I’ve been trowling out. Im interested in your feb 2013 diary entry, there is a photo with bamboo sticks marking your asparagus, and the comment says you need to cut holes through the weed matting for the plants. Have you used matting as you can’t guarantee a weed free ground? how large a hole did you cut and how long do you intend to have the matting down. I’m interested because in all my reading I’ve never seen weed suppressant matting used for asparagus. Not knowing how hungry asparagus is will I need to add manure (in my case chicken) to the green waste compost when planting?
Thanks ginaActually I had not intended to mulch the asparagus with fabric but it was the quickest way to deal with vigorous buttercups pushing through manure. Everything has happened so fast here and I would have done better to have mulched the ground for a few months before planting. So it is experimental and I plan to remove the fabric by midsummer, may have some perennial weeds to trowel out. I have not cut any holes yet as there will be no spears pushing up until the frosts have finished (four weeks?).
Your plot sounds well prepared at least! Asparagus grows stronger on rich soil but if your underlying soil is in good heart, the green waste compost on top will be fine for now, with plants so small.
