Just coming to the end of the asparagus harvest and it looks like we will have as near as dammit 1.5kg per square metre (just over 13lbs from 4 square metres of dedicated crowns).

Not knowing whether this is good, average or poor, I was just wondering if this is a sort of yield that people would start saying: ‘You might want to replace the crowns sometime’ or whether it is the sort of yield that healthy crowns in the prime of life might be expected to yield??

Thanks for any knowledge on this one…….

I wonder if you recorded the yield last year because in the cold spring, asparagus grew poorly whereas this year it has given at least twice the harvest. Your figure is good! I have not kept records per square metre, so cannot compare.

    Thanks for the insight.

I don’t know last year’s figure as I only started keeping proper records this year for anything but the tomatoes and potatoes, but it’s definitely more this year!

I don’t know exactly how many crowns there are, but I can say that a few a relatively unproductive and a few are hugely productive. It’s probably around 1lb per crown, I suspect.
