Aspect.

Hi Charles. I have been reading and considering for the future development of my plot the aspect of aspect! I remember during the last year you were offered some topsoil which you added to a raised bed without sides; did you apply it evenly or did you shape the bed to increase the south facing aspect? To influence bed shape in this manner is no small task – IYO is it a worthy investment? It would seem that an increase in South facing aspect, combined with a windbreak, a south facing wall to radiate heat absorbed during the day, and fertile soil create a powerful combination for sound growth! How far should one go with this – most allotments are on the flat….

Harvests have been plentiful this year, even with the lack of sun, thanks for your advice.

Glad your crops are good!
Aspect helps but…. as you say its a lot of work to change it. Also any slope means water runoff, and a compost mulch may roll downhill.
At Lower Farm my aspect was northwest and crops were good. Using fleece in spring helps early growth.

Thank you. A voice of experience is much appreciated on many things, but especially if it saves hours of back breaking graft! I’m weighing up options for future development on my plot and wish to create a list of priorities; changing aspect will be pretty low on the list!

Broad bean plants have provided a huge yield and first early spuds have gotten a bit large but are still delicious; much to still come.
