I have just been sowing some onion seeds in modules & found some shallot seed. In the past I have always thinned my seedlings to one per module, but I am am going to use the technique in the videos ( growing 4 per module and planting out as a group).

Charles mentioned only sowing 3 seeds for shallots as the will bunch up, but these seeds are Banana Shallots which grow singles. Can I grow them 4/5 to a module.

Also does anyone know roughly how viable onion/shallot seed is? Mine are a bit old now, they state sow by 2012 & 2013.

Your seed won’t be as viable as fresh, depending on how well it’s been stored. I would sow six seeds per module and plant out whatever germinates.
You could do some now and more later according to results.

Its risky to sow seed that old, it may have been harvested as much as six years ago. You risk wasting the space in your propagating space and the compost.
Fo banana shallots, you could grow 4 or 5 per module if your soil is well composted. I am puzzled by what exactly they are, seeming quite onion-like to me, similar to Long Red Florence though smaller. Good luck with them.

It’s not necessary to grow them in modules, you can sow them all in small seed tray and then later plant out pulled seedlings. I was told by experienced lady this works for onions, so why not shallots. That way you will not waste space and compost if seeds are bad.
