I have had success planting beets in my raised beds almost year round for 15 years. (I am an hour east of San Francisco) Suddenly, well, for 6 months, I can’t grow beets to save my life. I might have 2-3 seedlings come up out of two 8 ft rows. Not sure what it is: inadvertently planting too deep? All sprouts carried off by birds? A couple of bad seed packets (they are 6-12 months old)? I rotate between the beds, and actually the latest failure is a new bed I put in the middle of my lawn (best sun) for next years tomatoes.
Any thoughts?

Hi Greg, I have lots of ideas but hard to say for sure. Seed age could be a factor but if the same seed were growing for you 6 months ago, maybe that is not the problem. Birds do like beet seedlings. You must be planting about the same depth. Does your new bed have different ingredients? To discover more, I would sow a few in an older bed where you can find space and some in pots/trays on the windowsill or a greenhouse to check seed quality. Keep us posted!
