My boltardy beetroot has formed nice golf ball sized roots (from a March planting). However, the flavour is disappointing (slightly unpleasant). I’ve read that this is down to a boron deficiency in the soil and that using a borax solution will sort the problem. Does anyone have any experience of this? The beetroot are planted in raised beds mulched with spent mushroom compost.
    Thanks,

    Tom

This excellent magazine just featured a trial of beetroot varieties, found that Boltardy and Pablo were least sweet as “baby beet” (2-4cm I think) but improved and Boltardy gave highest yield in the end.

I use Jannis, which is an ‘improved boltardy’ and it really is very delicious!  I got some good seed from Tuckers , not so great from Tamar
