Some of my early Leeks have just started to bold. I guess I sowed them too early in late February? Is it best to harvest the bolters straight away and will they be edible?

mmm…. I`ve never had that with new leeks, only with mature, over wintered plants which is normal as they reach the end of their life. It could be the sowing date, I am tending to sow earlier than I used to but not until the beginning of April. I think its more likely to be weather related, most of my leeks this year have developed long pale stems and I was wondering if they were going to bolt.

I have had some bolters, say 5% from March sown leeks, in modules in the greenhouse. I find that all sowings before about mid April carry higher risk of boilting because leeks are biennial and then think they have perhaps been through a winter, so flowering tendency is increased. Outdoor leek sowings are best made in the middle of April in my experience.
Onion sets planted before about mid March carry similar risk, I find early April is good.
What time do you sow onion seed Charles as lots of mine bolted this year. I think it was weather related but up here I find I have to get onions and leeks off early otherwise they don`t make enough growth before the weather cools off.

I sow onion SEED from early February until about mid March and had a few bolters this year, more than usual, but those dates have worked consistently. I plant these modules by early April, often with a fleece cover to help them establish.
I appreciate that you need to use all time possible!
