Hi Charles/all
We are lucky enough to have just taken on one of a dozen or so brand new allotments that have been created on a housing development built on land that was previously farmland. The allotments have been rotivated and there are some perennial weeds that need clearing but the soil looks pretty good.
My questions are: a) would you tread the soil to compact it a bit before spreading the compost/manure, b) how thick a layer of compost and/or cardboard (or similar) would you suggest, and c) any other tips?

I would rake level, use cardboard only if perennial weeds are present eg couch grass, otherwise 2-4in/5-10cm compost is good plus say card & woody waste on paths.
