We are just starting our no-dig journey here in our organic kitchen garden. We are just now preparing the beds for compost to be laid on top (a little late but oh well!!) but we have last years brassica beds with broccoli in – should we dig the broccoli roots out gently, or saw them off at the bottom and leave the root to compost in? some advice would be much appreciated thank you!

It is simplest to rotate the whole plant so the stem breaks off most of the roots and only a few main ones come out. Sometimes you need a sharp spade to cut around any monster brassicas. If your broccoli has not yet cropped, you can compost around it and twist it out in April or May when finished.

    Good growing on your journey.
