We’re not huge cabbage eaters but I find them useful to bulk out stir fries and thought it worthwhile to grow a few. Maybe we’ll become fans! Most sources of advice describe cabbage by season (Spring summer autumn winter) – including my 2012 edition of Organic Gardening, which only covers 2 seasons.
I’m a bit confused about varieties. The catalogues & websites for seed don’t tend to distinguish them in this way, either missing seasons or lumping them together as simply “cabbage”, or by their shape etc.
Is it a bit like lettuce, where the seed packet says one thing but we really can sow most varieties for seasonal harvest? Or do we have to sow specific varieties? What are your go to varieties? I have greyhound (which was a magazine sample).
Yes I wonder if the descriptions are always accurate.
Speed og growth is main criterion, so you can sow Greyhound now for September harvest or end July for November harvest, approx. dates.
Sow Tundra now & until about mid July for savoy-like heads in winter.
Worth trying a few Greyhound as a September sowing, to overwinter small and head up in April.
