I wanted to post to say that this year I have tried to use Charles’ methods as much as possible (compost on beds, sowing times etc) and especially his method for spuds – planting them quite shallow and then adding loads of compost as they grow. My husband said he couldn’t see how that would work but I confiscated his shovel. As we have animals I was also able to mulch them with lots of straw. I have harvested the earlies, which were my own saved spuds from last year and some organic Charlotte. The result was fabulous – each plant gave several potatoes, mostly large or medium, some with up to 10 or 12 spuds! I was deeply impressed. I just pulled up the stem and up came the taties. A quick firkle around with a trowel soon brought up the others. No more back breaking planting, or digging them out with forks and stabbing half of them!
The plants had just started to look blighted but the stems seemed unaffected and the spuds look good. Because of the blight I have had to cut down the second crop but the stems seem unaffected so I will soon dig those too.
Thank you so much for restoring my faith! I have been growing veg for ten years, with very mixed results and we are finally feeding ourselves with our own produce. The only glitch remains radishes, the so called childs play of veg. Have never produced an edible one, they produce large leaves but the roots are woody and too hot to eat. One last go at them in the autumn then I am giving up the battle with the little red blighters!

Thanks for sharing this Antipodes, I am delighted to hear it.
I am sure radish will work for you, sow early September and not before.
Heat in radish is from growing in high temperatures. Woodiness may be from sowing in May rather than March.
