    Hi Charles

As Shakespeare would as to chit or not to chit?

    Does it make a difference?

If you’re talking about potatoes, then I chit only the very first earlies. But you need to keep the rest in a cool, dark place otherwise they will start to sprout and then you have no choice but to chit. To get around this, I try not to buy my potatoes too early – late Feb usually, then I don’t have to store them for as long. Old timers chit all and everything but I’ve read more recently that it’s not a good idea and just uses up the seed potatoes energy reserves. I never chit onions or garlic and I get great crops. Hope this helps.
