Clearing ground/hedgehogs

This is just a small plea to please be aware that hedgehogs are currently nesting and rearing young. If you’re about to clear some ground, please have a good look in the undergrowth just in case there is a nest.  There are so many orphans at this time of year, the worst garden hazards are strimmers and netting as well as slug pellets. If the nest is disturbed the mother may not return, and the hoglets won’t survive. They can also nest in some odd places like an upturned canoe, so please keep a lookout for our slug eating friends!

Good call Daucus. Saw my first only late last week – first for at least two years that is. Less around I guess? They’re welcome in my garden….

They’re in trouble – numbers are declining and we see lots of sick and injured adults, as well as getting lots of orphans that need to be hand reared. If you are lucky enough to have one visiting your garden it might be an ideal area for hedgehogs to start breeding. A safe house and some cat biscuits would probably attract a few more!
