Do I just have to rely on hoeing to remove new weed growth from spread compost? However careful I am with the content I inevitably get weed seeds!

Yes good point. The forum advice here on using mypex (phormisol) is one alternative.
Hoeing is normally quick and effective, especially if weeds are small but the mild autumn this year has seen weeds germinating later than usual in damp weather when hoeing is not possible. Tricky!
Better to be spreading the compost a little later, from now, with cold on the way. Then weed seeds germinate in spring when they are easier to deal with.
I have been using a trowel to scuff the surface and keep weeds from growing more but they are surviving.
