Some one on facebook group is claiming that bought compost has to be used in 4 weeks or it goes ‘off’ and you have to add more nutrients. He claims to be an expert and has been told that by an experienced allotment owner but I am rather sceptical as my home made compost and even the commercial stuff has often sat around for months…

    What is your experience?

Actually Bluebell there are two kinds of compost tea which confuses this question. Is yours the liquid seepage of compost? if so a collection of some nutrients, mainly. It would keep for a long time except for a loss of lively elements.
Compost tea as mostly made nowadays is a stirred brew, aerated for 24 hours, starting with a small amount of high quality compost, some sugars too, to multiply all the fungi and bacteria. I understand that it stays full of life for less than a day and wants uaing asap after being made. Have not used it myself, it is popular for example on golf greens where they don’t want to spread compost!
