    Hello Charles

I’ve created an 18M by 1.2M bed on my allotment by digging turves off each side and placing the turves on the bed itself (I’ve chopped up the clods of soil down to the size of an orange) . At 4-5″ , I’ve probably dug the turves a little too deep. Most of the bed was covered with weaved plastic so is now mostly clear of weeds. About a third of the bed wasn’t covered for very long so still has a lot of couch grass and dandelion roots on the turves and path. I’ve started covering the bed now with manure (about 2-3″) which isn’t completely rotted as I can still see straw. The plan was to leave the bed (both the weed free and still weedy parts) covered with nothing but the manure for a few months until planting time in the new year.

Do you think this approach will work?

    Any advice appreciated.

Hello Asif and welcome to the forum, as ever it depends on details like how many, if any, couch and dandelion roots are still alive in the main part of the bed, how much manure you spread etc.
You have made a large and impressive bed but in this first year I would be cautious about weed regrowth esp where there are still lots of roots, I would keep some mypex over that end all year and plant something through it e.g. squash. Also have the mypex running over the paths, you have to clean the paths of weed roots too, otherwise couch grass for example just spreads back into the bed.

Thank you for all the pointers Charles. Looking forward to put them into practice.
