Creating compost

Hello all,

Brand new member here so if I commit any faux pas please don’t chastise too heavily.

One question I have is when making compost I try to follow a minimum half and half mix but should I be doing this mix by volume or by weight?
E.g a barrow full of fresh horse manure would weigh a considerable amount more than a barrow of grass clippings or am I reading too much into this?

I use volume. At this time of year, I am using straw as my carbon material and its a 2 to 1 mix. In the Autumn when I have fallen leaves, river reeds or shredded hedge clippings I use 1 to 1 mix.

Thanks Mick,

I’ve been doing it by volume as I have an inexhaustible supply of horse manure, going about 50kg a week, that’s an awful lot of grass clippings to keep up!
In the process of filling my new raised beds at the moment so hoping to have enough home made compost to top fill in the winter.
