I keep reading that the roots of bean plants ( I’ve planted Suttons ) should be dug in as they have stored nitrogen in them. How does this work with no dig.
I’m about to pull them up.
DavidI always just cut the plants off at ground level and leave the roots where they are.
Its so simple, as Bluebell says just cut stems at ground level and leave roots in place. The nitrogenous nodules are in the soil already, so it seems odd for someone to invent the work of digging them in!
Hi, I cut my Firestorm and Sunburst Runner Beans to ground level last year and am experiencing a bonus crop of beans from them this year where the roots sprouted, probably due to the mild Winter and the heatwave weather here in Portsmouth, only problem is, I will have to put up some supports for them! Jeanette
JayJay, I had the same situation, runner beans overwintered. I dug mine up because they weren’t where I wanted them, and root was huge and woody.
