I’ve just noticed my Green Maraicher cucumber plant, grown in a pot in the dry under a carport, has started getting a white coloured disease on its leaves. Looks a bit fungal to the inexperienced eye.

As the crop is now harvesting reasonably, I’m loath to kill the plant off unless it will decimate neighbouring tomato plants, which are also now burdened with plenty of fruit.

Any knowledge of cucumber diseases appreciated!

Common in dry conditions, not a worry and not a problem for tomatoes, you can remove the infected leaves. Watering may help if the compost is dry.

I’ve been watering pretty regularly, but with the heat we’ve been having, inevitably, the odd time it has dried out. That probably triggered it.

They are quite good cucumbers too, the Green Maraichers. They swell very rapidly and end up about five inches long and a good inch thick, weighing around half a pound each. They are supposed to be adapted for outdoor growing, although this summer the outdoors has been rather like a greenhouse!!

They sound delicious, just right for hot weather. What a treat it is to have so much sunshine, something one cannot add in a wet summer, whereas we can water plants in most situations. Some of my outdoor melons (on compost heaps) look as happy as the indoor ones, a rare event.
