Empty space on allotment

Hello,
We have a strip of about 50 cm either side of our new raised beds (the arithmetic went a bit wrong!). They are too narrow for another bed, but too big to be left unused. There’s a bramble hedge boundary on one side and the next plot on the other and the paths between and round our lovely new raised beds are cardboard covered with bark chipping. Do you have any suggestions for this unused space?
I was thinking of mulching to smother weeds and then planting comfrey/ herbs/ companion flowers. Your help will be much appreciated on how to make the most of this empty space. Thank you.

Cold frame?, tomatoes in grobags? containers for herbs? another compost heap?

Hi Lottie,

I am assuming from your description that you have a raised bed, then a path area and the this 50cm strip.
I would not plant Comfrey unless you plan on the Bocking 14 variety. Comfrey is very invasive. You could put Herbs in or various fast growing Veggies i.e., Radish.
But I think companion flowers/Plants for pollinators, Cosmos, Marigolds, Dill, etc., is an excellent idea. I strongly believe every allotment, whatever it’s size, should have such an area incorporated into the site.
