Morning all, my landlord (farmer) just offered me a big trailer full of manure from the cow shed, he wants to stick it in a trailer and bring it round for me …. I need to get it out of the way in the corner I guess to let it rot, but does it need to be covered or anything or can I just leave it in a “big pile” ? Cheers
Its optional, if you had a large sheet of polythene that will help it to break down with worms busier in darkness, as long as its all moist when the cover goes on. Uncovered works too. If you are in a v wet climate, covers help some nutrients not to leach away, if the manure in undecomposed.
Ok great, I will find a spot to pile it up and I have some poleythene to cover with.
Would be a shame to turn it down for free, and he says I can have as much as I want !
Apparently it can be used “fresh(ish)” as a base layer to then be covered with straw and compost for growing melons ? The heat helps I’m told….
