I sowed a row of 1st early Red Duke of York for the first time on 16th March and one plant is already flowering. I get the impression from reading around internet discussion groups that 10 – 13 weeks is pretty standard for this strain. Mine are currently 9 weeks since sowing and only about 4 weeks since emergence from the ground.
Is harvesting 1st earlies before the end of May usual, normal in early warm springs or abnormally early (i.e. I should leave them in the ground for 3 or 4 more weeks)?
Nothing is normal this year, its your choice when to harvest. You could take a few potatoes to eat now and leave the rest to grow, or whatever you like, I am looking at my Swift and wondering that…
My “Colleen” first earlys are also showing flowers, not quite open yet but still very exciting for someone who hasn’t grown veg before. I’ll savour these when I crop my first ones.
