My brassicas are coming along well (sown and planted according to your ‘Growing Winter Vegetables.) My question is can I just use fleece laid over the top to prevent caterpillars or will the white butterflies just shoot their eggs through the fleece where the leaf makes contact? I am rather daunted at the cost of butterfly netting or vegemesh, and already have fleece. In the past I tried in vain rubbing the eggs off the brassica leaves and quickly realised the these eggs are firmly embedded!

Nice description of butterflies shooting eggs, it does feel like that sometimes!
Fleece can work but…. is easily torn and you need only one hole for a butterfly to enter. Then their eggs and caterpillars are protected from predators.So I recommend mesh or netting, the latter of ‘butterfly grade’. Yes they are expensive but last longer than fleece, up to fifteen years. Also they let more air through which is better in summer.
