Please can you advise on the best way to deal with my red onions that have developed flower buds. Seems a variety of advice on the web including lifting them and eating now. I have just nipped them off & am reluctant to lift the onions now – as it is the first time I have grown them & I so want to see them drying on their bed!! I need a bit of sreet cred amongst my fellow allotmenteers.

Sorry to disappoint you but there is no remedy here, once they are flowering there is no more bulb growth. Best pulled and eat what you can, same for any bolting onion.

Red onions from sets are notoriously difficult and it is not your fault! But try growing from seed next year, raise as plug plants if you can, sown Feb-early March indoors. Mine struggled at first but look good now and no bolters.
