Garlic harvest

Hi Charles/All,

I have just harvested one of my varieties of Garlic.
It is Tuscany Wight and I planted it in early December, The bulbs vary in size from 3.5cm to 5cm.
I don’t know if this is normal for this particular variety as I haven’t grown it before but it seems a little on the small size. The bulbs are perfectly formed.
I would normally plant Garlic in early October and I’m just wondering if the 2 month delay in planting would account for the small size?

Hi Don, I have not grown Tuscany, expect its a hardback and they tend to be smaller e.g. my Solent Wight is often 5cm across, and great flavour. So no worries and I think it actually makes little difference whether one plants October or early December, from comparing the dates here.
In colder climates with frost by December, the earlier sowing is worthwhile.

I actually grew them on the recommendation of a Chef and as I had the space available I thought I would give them a try even though it was later than I would normally plant Garlic.. We eat a lot of Garlic so if they are as good as I’ve been told I will need to grow more of them next season if this is their normal size.
