Can anyone advise appropriate spacings for these Fruits which I’m about to plant in open ground. I see in some books where a spacing of 6 feet each way is recommended but that seems very excessive?

My redcurrant is easily 4 foot across, after two years in the ground, so a five foot wide area, as recommended in books, sounds reasonable. In fact one of my rhubarbs is maybe 5 or 6 feet away, and its growth is significantly less than that of the other two rhubarbs, which I put down to competition. The most vigorous rhubarb has the least competition.
Yes they grow quickly and root far but a closer spacing of 3-4 feet is possible if you prune both winter and summer, after fruiting. Interesting about your rhubarb Leif!
I would say it also depends on how easy you want access to pick and weed.
If you are strapped for space I have seen them grown on taller stems or as espalier – just a bit more work to maintain.
