grass and hedge cuttings

i have taken on another allotment plot coverd in brambels i am working meter wide strips digging out the crowns, the question is a freind of mine is a garden contractor and gets loads of grass clippings and hedge clippings would they be good to make beds with ie put them a foot deep in situ or rot them down in a clamp first i can have as many ton bags full as i need ?……….pete

 Any free organic matter is good but you will do well to grow anything in that mixture, however it would make a nice clean surface for planting next spring and even this autumn perhaps. If you have space to compost some, that would be good too.

hi adding to the questins above iwas told there would be to much nitrogen in the mixture of leaves and grass,it is being used initialy for weed clearance then stable manure on top, of course i would like to grow in the beds this year what do you think would do well in this mixture befor i get the stable manure?………..pete

 It all depends how much wood/leaves (carbon) and how much grass (N), it will be composting in situ and I doubt there will be any surplus of nitrogen, try cucurbits for example.

@vegypete, maybe you can put down this material on surface where you wanna grow and start with seedlings.
I don’t have slugs here and this method works.
Last year i put down deep fresh mulch and a week later planted with seedlings.
I made individual holes into mulch, filled them with compost and planted peppers, tomatoes, basil, melons from seedlings and also sowed some big seeds like bush beans.
