Greetings and a HNY Charles and everyone. I’ve been a ‘lurker’ to the forums and website for the last 2 years or so and always find some fascinating reading.

I set up a small no-dig plot in my front lawn a couple of years ago following the advice on here and the books – one side being much more productive than the other due, no doubt, to competition from the privet hedge! Despite the small size (13’x9′) we grow potatoes and brassicas as their taste is so much better than the shop bought stuff.

Anyway we acquired an allotment plot at the beginning of September which I completed digging a few days ago, despite wanting to go the no-dig route from the off; as well as digging out loads of nettle, dock and buttercup roots (I’m sure I’ll have left enough behind for them to make a comeback though) I’ve had to remove old fence posts, plastic bags, glass, wire, string, rope, chains and a couple of chocolate wrapper mines. Anyway the 1st load of manure is ordered (hopefully the same black, crumbly stuff that was delivered to a plot neighbour a few weeks ago) and the start of the adventure has begun….

 Good luck with the allotment. Interesting comment about needing to dig to remove rubbish and rubble, worth doing when it is that bad and good luck with the manure.

Thanks Charles. I was surprised at the amount, and nature, of some of the rubbish I had to dig out, especially considering the previous holder had kept chickens on part of the plot. The manure came today – mainly well rotted, crumbly and black but with a few ‘lumps’ containing unrotted straw. Anyway it’s now spread 3″ deep over my plot and I’m looking forward to spring now.
