Growing between garlics and onions

Hey guys do any of you grow between garlics and onions in the early stages or do you wait until last stages just before harvesting them? I grow a lot of garlic and have a fair amount of space that could be used

I plant daylength sensitive south american tubers between garlic because they don’t really start to take off until well after the garlic has been harvested. The oca and ullucu can go in anytime after the final frost and once the soil has warmed up a bit, as long as the garlic has been well weeded first. So not the early stages, but well before the last stages. The period of drought that garlic requires before harvesting doesn’t seem to hold them back too much.

Thank for the reply my garlic are atleast 6″ already. I was thinking more down the line of lettuce, spinach, pak choi, or smaller plant along this lines.

Radish plant clumps if sown under glass in modules now would probably work well Shaun. I guess you are short on space? Do a search on inter planting/ sowing as there are a couple of good threads on these subjects and it’s a part of gardening which is good fun and there is room for some creativity. Enjoy.

Hi Shaun,

You don’t mention what spacing you are using for your Onions and Garlic.
I plant both at 8″ eachway and I plant in late September/October.
I get a lot of good sized bulbs at this spacing but I wouldn’t intercrop in this instance.
